Statement

Originally from Lancashire I now live in Hull, East Yorkshire. I am a lecturer specialising in print and textiles at Hull School of Art and Design.

Repeated visits to record my response to the minimal view across the River Humber motivate my work, my obsession induces a strong sense of the sublime. The subject remains the same, but the light and atmosphere are changing constantly and so too my reactions to it. I see the beauty in this flat isolated place, the dominant sky, fleeting effects of elemental forces and atmospheric light.

I translate my responses using a variety of media, my approach is all about experimenting with techniques and processes. My heart is in getting my hands dirty and as colour is of utmost importance to me I am fascinated with the alchemy of dying processes. Attempting to capture the ethereal qualities of luminosity and light sustain my engagement with fluorescent pigment. My aim is to use fluorescence and pulsating colour contrasts to induce sublime experiences for the viewer.
